Job Description
The Department of Fashion Design offers an undergraduate BA
Fashion Design as well a Diploma in Fashion Production. The Department also
offers postgraduate programs in Design from Honours to Doctoral levels. The
successful incumbent will engage with both undergraduate teaching and
postgraduate supervision in all department program offerings. In addition, the
successful incumbent is expected to enhance research and annually contribute to
accredited research outputs.
Responsibilities as an Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer
- Discipline-specific teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Actively recruit and supervise postgraduate students
- Participate in program, curriculum development and coordination
- Perform administrative and other ad hoc duties as required
- Significantly contribute to accredited publications (textual and/or creative output) as per UJ requirements
- Obtain funding from external bodies
- Build and develop international networks and partnerships
Minimum Requirements
- A doctoral qualification with a focus on Design (Fashion)
- Deep knowledge of the discipline
- Must have 5-10 years discipline-specific teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate tertiary levels
- Experience in university programme and curriculum development
- Evidence of completed postgraduate supervision
- Proven research excellence with significant accredited research output
- A well-developed teaching portfolio that provides evidence of scholarship of teaching, learning and research
- Track record of research funding received
- Involvement in the national or international academic community and/or industry
- NRF rating or intention to obtain NRF rating within the next three years

- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
- Excellent teaching and supervisory skills
- Good planning and organizational skills
- Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines
- Ability to self-manage personal research
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with colleagues
Recommendations
- Developed research foci in design (Fashion) such as, smart textiles, technology and creative practice
- Have active international collaborations
